Website Details

This was a sub-contract project, and at the behest of the firm we have contracted to, we cannot mention the client's name or website online.

This project originally started out as a basic redevelopment of their existing infastructure, with the goal being to accurately preserve the existing functionality while providing a much better user experience and product quality.

The key flaws in their existing system were numerous, but we'll list the most important.

Number one would have to be the quality of the HTML itself. The HTML was written so poorly that there were many features which only appeared in Internet Explorer. The Administration Interface for editing properties being one of them. Very poorly done, and probably very costly to the client. An added example of the incompetence behind the code of this website would be the navigation menus. Each menu item would have a "fly-out" menu which appears when the mouse cursor hovers over the menu item. The menu was actually offset by a large enough amount that although the menu appeared, you could not even use it - it would disappear once the mouse cursor moved off of the current menu item.

Additionally, the site's meta information was spam-ridden, overfilled with many incorrectly spelled variations of local cities, as if to somehow gain search engine relevance. Their "great idea" didn't pay off though, because I couldn't find any results for the website when I searched for Bradingtown - one of the many misspelled keywords.

While there are many other things to mention, the most important would be the redevelopment, so let's get started!

The original system was thrown in the trash bin, and replaced with a custom-built PHP + MySQL based solution. The new system is very flexible, easily accomodating additions and modfications to the system.

The HTML was also completely re-written and is 100% standards compliant XHTML 1.0 Strict styleized with CSS. The site also features a separate printer-friendly stylesheet to listings or articles to be printed like they were meant to be, as listings and articles, NOT screen-captures of a website. What's the use of printing a big old menubar on a peice of paper? Print-only stylesheets are user-friendly, automatic, and can produce beautiful results WITHOUT having to manually craft a "printer-friendly version" of the same web document.

We also took a fresh approach to the Administration Interface, in the form of a simplistic yet highly intuitive design and scalable security measures.

This is about as much as we can possibly fit into this portfolio entry, but we welcome you to ask for the details!
